Comparison of SMD, COB and MIP LED display packaging technologies

SMD & COB & MIP

At the display level, the point spacing of MIP can be minimized, followed by COB, and SMD is more restrictive in point spacing;

Overall, MIP is better than SMD and COB in terms of LED chip size, electrical connection, contrast, mounting link, repairability, flatness, mixed lamp bin, etc.

It can be seen that MIP is suitable for smaller chips, with more room for reducing spacing and cost reduction.In the future, the direction of Micro LED is clear, and MIP holds obvious advantages. As a global leader in visual display technology, REISSDISPLAY actively explores emerging technology trends, invests in MIP packaging technology, and drives industry development.

Frequently Asked Questions

1 What is a MIP LED display?

A MIP LED display (MicroLED In Package) is a fine-pitch screen technology that packages RGB Micro LED chips smaller than 100 microns into individual surface-mounted units. It combines the small pixel pitch of Micro LED with the mature, cost-efficient production of SMD, delivering high contrast, high reliability, and low power consumption for indoor video walls.

2 What is the difference between MIP, COB, and SMD LED displays?

MIP allows the smallest achievable pixel pitch, followed by COB, while SMD is the most limited in pitch reduction. Compared with SMD and COB, MIP offers advantages in LED chip size, electrical connection, contrast, mounting process, repairability, flatness, and color bin mixing—making it the most future-ready choice for sub-1mm Micro LED displays.

3 What pixel pitches does the MIP LED display support?

The REISSDISPLAY IFM-MIP Series covers pixel pitches from P0.6 to P1.8 (0.625mm, 0.78mm, 0.93mm, 1.25mm, 1.56mm, and 1.875mm). All models share a standard 600×337.5×28mm cabinet, so different pitches can be combined within the same video wall installation.

4 How energy-efficient is the MIP LED screen?

By combining a common-cathode design, flip-chip packaging, and an energy-saving driver IC, the MIP LED display reduces power consumption by roughly 34% versus conventional solutions. Average power consumption is ≤150 W/㎡ with a maximum of ≤450 W/㎡, helping lower long-term operating costs.

5 What is the lifespan of the MIP LED display?

The IFM-MIP Series is rated for a 100,000-hour lifespan. Its seven-layer protection guards against dust, moisture, impact, and static, and individual pixels are repairable on site—so a faulty light can be fixed locally without returning the module to the factory, saving both time and maintenance cost.

6 Where is the MIP LED display typically used?

MIP LED displays are ideal for high-resolution indoor environments such as conference rooms, control rooms, command centers, data centers, broadcast studios, exhibition halls, retail spaces, and lobbies. Ultra-thin (28mm) and lightweight (4.8kg per cabinet) cabinets make installation flexible even in space-constrained locations.
